Creating Safety Champions in Automobile Sector: PAN India

With four to five thousand people falling prey to accidents in factories every year and lakhs of workers suffering injuries in India, the importance of industrial safety has increased and its need is being strongly felt.

It is now established that most unsafe incidents/ accidents take place because of non-adherence of safety standards/processes by workforce. Shortcuts, haste, carelessness, non- concentration are some of the forms of non-adherence of Safety standards/ processes. Hence, it is of prime importance that employees are not only aware of safety, but knowledgeable about the same and at the same time apply safety procedures.

ICECD, along with Castrol India Ltd. and Tata Motors has implemented the Minimum Mandatory Standards Programme towards enhancing safety skills and further developing a safety culture at Tata Motors dealer workshops and authorised service stations across India.

Participants from TATA Motors went back with more knowledge and better approach towards safety procedures at their workplace.

The intensive safety awareness training programmes by ICECD reached out to 1675 participants including General Managers, Asst. General Managers, Works Managers and Safety Coordinators from Tata Motors workshops, who left as 'Safety Champions' post the training. The impact of this initiative is twofold. Firstly, the participants would now be better equipped to implement this safety programme in their workshops, to keep the required basic standards of safety at their workplace. Secondly, they are now sensitized towards a safe behaviour and would approach their work with safety as a priority in their actions and behaviour. This would result in a safer society with fewer accidents/ injuries, thus leading to better quality of life. ICECD looks forward to scale up these interventions and take these across geographies to maximise safety and minimize loss of precious lives.
